The Tolbooth was built in the 17th century and modified during the next three centuries along with the surrounding buildings. Only the tower or 'wardhouse' survives from the original building built in 1750. The sundial set into the south front of the 'wardhouse' bears a Latin motto meaning, 'As flies the shadow, so does life'. It may date from 1733-4.
