For around 70 years St. Modan’s played an important role in the life of Falkirk but by 1985 the financial demands of building maintenance were proving too burdensome for the congregation. Water penetration was badly damaging the sandstone, the heating system was ineffective, roof repairs were becoming urgent forcing a decision.
On 19th October 1986 Rev. Ron Smith conducted the last service and In 1991 the current development of 12 flats came up for sale.

A local campaign to stop the building from demolition was successful but proposals to convert the building into a small theatre fell through. The fine stained glass windows found a home in the Old Sherriff Court building in Hope Street and the baptismal font remains in the grounds.
